77th Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) | Celebration of the Heroes

77th Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor)

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”.

Being reminded of this famous saying from a proverb gave me the goosebumps as the Commemoration of the 77th Day of Valor tipped off last April 8-9, 2019.

It was then on April 9, 1942, when the combined forces of the Philippines and American troops succumbed to the oppressive hands of the Japanese that time. Little did they know that the infliction they will be facing would eventually be a walk to remember and absolutely go down to history books. 77th Araw ng Kagitingan

The Death March, it was the hellish walk of 80,000 Filipinos and American captives from Bagac and Mariveles, Bataan to Capas, Tarlac via San Fernando, Pampanga route. Eyes tainted with blood, bodies that were barely moving, throat and stomach that asks for an oasis of water and food, death was imminent and its scythe already taking lives. The tragedy that our forefathers had gone through was immeasurable, yet what remained was the urge to live and to fight another day not with guns and swords, but with their feet marching towards the unknown and giving us what we enjoy today, freedom.

Fortunate enough, that from the freedom that we’re experiencing today, we were able to witness a 2-day event commemorating the 77th Day of Valor held in Bataan.
The 1st day was a pre-commemoration rite with the World War II Veterans alongside with other guests. 77th Araw ng Kagitingan

The event was kindled by Congresswoman Geraldine Roman with a speech honoring and giving thanks to the locals of Bataan for their unwavering support for the event.

Foot Parade

The event started with a foot parade recognizing the different local organizations in Bataan.

One of the highlights of the event was the beautiful float parade prepared by different towns to depict the history of the Death March with a re-enactment that would touch everybody’s soft spot, making you feel the pain first hand just by knowing that that kind of tragedy occurred.

As we embrace the twilight of the day, the Veterans of World War II were given commemorative pins to give gratitude to their hardworking services during WWII.

Another extravagant highlight that gave us a boost lifting us up from a heart-warming performance of depiction of a tragedy to entertaining performances of Philippine Army, Philippine Marines, and Philippine Air Force’s finest drum and lyre corps.

The 1st day of the event was truly a success capping it off with the winners of the float parade and the drum and lyre corps performances.
Pilar got the 3rd place, Balanga got the 2nd place, and Samal got the 1st place.

The following day of the event was the exact day of the Annual commemoration of the 77th Day of Valor with the theme: “Sakripisyo ng Beterano ay Gunitain, Gawing Tanglaw ng Kabataan Tungo sa Kaunlaran“.
The day started with a morning breeze filled with enthusiasm and smile from every person going to Mt. Samat, where the event took place. 77th Araw ng Kagitingan

The program began with the invocation of all the veterans and locals that made the event possible.

DILG Sec. Eduardo Año spearheaded the wreath-laying ceremony, with him was Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Koji Haneda and Deputy Chief of Mission of the United States of America John Law.
Bataan Governor Albert S. Garcia gave the opening remarks and after that Sec. Año awarded the winners of the national creative painting, essay writing, and oratorical contests before giving his keynote and a message from our President.

As the Mt. Samat shrine stood tall, many of the 5-year plans were laid before our eyes. Those of which was the Development Scale Model, Augmented Reality designed for an underground museum giving more hype to its tourism life, and the Visitors Complex which will be composed of 3 buildings that will cater information about the history with the means of a movie theater and a platform for local products.

The drastic death march had long been done, but the walks that our forefathers endured will be forever etched with us, creating a ripple that the future generations will reap as Bataan move forward to its full potential.

Himeji Castle: The Largest and Most Visited Castle in Japan

Ever dreaming of entering a humongous castle? How about the one with huge interiors, on a massive land, and on the top of a hill? In Japan, your dream is never impossible. Here’s Himeji Castle, the largest and the most visited castle in Japan!

Himeji Castle - www.twobudgettravelers.com
Himeji Castle - www.twobudgettravelers.com

It was a rainy morning when we left Umeda. A day had already passed after hitting Universal Studios Japan and on this day, we’re bound to go to Kinosaki Onsen but we’ll have to drop by Himeji first to see the great white castle.

Himeji Castle was registered in 1993 as one of the first UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the country. It is also considered as one if Japan’s premiere castles. The area within the middle moat of the castle complex is a designated Special Historic Site and five structures of the castle are also designated National Treasures.

Upon reaching Himeji Station, we immediately looked out at a window down the station and we can clearly see Himeji Castle on the high ground. This made us excited to get a closer look at the castle. From the station, you can just walk yourself to the castle.

We decided to rent a bicycle in the middle of the walk just to test it out and how the bicycle rental system works and it was amazing!

When we’re inside Himeji Castle’s grounds, no other thing can describe that amazing feeling. The park inside the gate was huge, it’s covered in trees and in the center was a wide closed area. I, myself, wondered how this area looks like in spring, where the flowers and cherry blossom leaves are starting to grow, and in winter, where the castle is covered in snow.

Entrance and its Fee

The entrance fee on the castle is 1000 Yen and 1040 Yen if you wanted to take a look at the Kokoen Garden (a zen garden). There also are coin lockers in the entrance to cater your baggage needs. Since we had too many bags on us, this is pretty convenient.

Himeji Castle - www.twobudgettravelers.com

Himeji Castle - www.twobudgettravelers.com

Himeji Castle - www.twobudgettravelers.com

The castle consists of six floors and you can climb up ’til the last floor. Since the castle was on restoration period when we got there, there are parts that were inaccessible and are still on repairs. Only the first floor had their decors on or those items that were used when the castle is on use several hundred years ago and are considered treasures of the past. Keep your head safe always as there are entrances to the upper floor and the passage hole isn’t too big. Keep safe!

There was nothing much to see inside during that time but if you’re an architecture student and a big fan of architectural structures, Himeji Castle is a must place for you. Some of the solid woods used in the castle are still intact and are dated like 200-400 years old. That’s how sturdy it was.

Topmost Floor View

Since the castle is up on the hill, you can almost see the entire city on the topmost floor from all angles.

Himeji Castle is also a highly popular cherry blossom spot during the short and crowded blooming season which usually falls into early April. This is also where Okiku’s well is located.

On this journey, we had known that Emil didn’t know how to ride a bicycle and on his attempt he got a stumbled off the bike, but he was okay. We took care of his baggage since we’re the ones on the bike and he just walked himself to the castle. Since it was drizzling too, he also got a slight fever to which made him stay inside on some of the castle’s waiting area. He felt okay when we’re heading out of Himeji and lead our way to Kinosaki Onsen.

Padyakan sa Bataan – of Bikes, Heroes, and the Marvel that is Bataan

On April 9 each year, Filipinos enjoy a non-working holiday in commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan, also known as the Day of Valor. Oftentimes, the schedule is adjusted so it falls on a Friday. This results in a long weekend or a three-day vacation for many Filipinos. People get into an excited frenzy as they prepare for out-of-town trips or simply take the time to laze around at home enjoying a movie marathon or their favorite Korean telenovela.
In Bataan, the festivities go beyond just the Day of Valor itself. The local government gets into a frenzy of their own as they prepare for celebrations that run for more than a week.

Araw ng Kagitingan: A Brief History

[hoops name=”InArticle”]
The Araw ng Kagitingan, after all, commemorates the historical Fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942. After months of battling it out against militarily superior enemy forces, the joint US-Filipino army was forced to surrender to the invading Japanese forces. With roughly 60,000 Filipino soldiers and up to 15,000 US troops falling prisoner, the Bataan surrender is by far the largest in both Philippine and American history.
Although our local soldiers succumbed to the enemy forces, the Battle of Bataan was hardly a defeat for the Philippines. The drawn-out defense of the Bataan peninsula halted the progress of the Japanese army, allowing the Filipino and US forces to gear up for subsequent battles and ultimately rise up as victors in the war against the Japanese.
Padyakan sa Bataan - https://twobudgettravelers.com
Forced to take part in the Death March from Bataan to San Fernando, Pampanga, many of the thousands of prisoners succumbed to starvation, dehydration, exhaustion, and disease and failed to make it out alive. Many also died at the cruel hands of the enemy forces.
The Filipino troops who fought at the Battle of Bataan are true heroes. They are among the reasons why we get to enjoy our out-of-town trips and Korean telenovelas with unbridled freedom. Unfortunately, these heroes are oftentimes also called the ‘Forgotten Soldiers’. For they do not get as much attention as they deserve. For people these days take the horrors of the past for granted as they enjoy the easy luxuries and freedom of the present time.
The Araw ng Kagitingan should serve as a reminder of the tenacity, courage, and sacrifice of the Philippine forces, not just of those from the past but also of those who continue to fight on our behalf.
Padyakan sa Bataan - https://twobudgettravelers.com
And so the local government of Bataan is up in arms as they battle it out for the best possible festivities this week. Yes, they are going all out in their preparations and have started to dish out the goodies last week. I, together with a blogger friend and people from the media, had the privilege of witnessing a portion of these festivities, particularly the annual ‘Padyakan sa Bataan’.

13th Annual Padyakan sa Bataan

Padyakan sa Bataan - https://twobudgettravelers.com
One of the events that kickstarted the 76th Year of Commemorating the Day of Valor, the 13th Annual ‘Padyakan sa Bataan’ was held on March 25, 2018. Around 553 bikers braved the challenging trails of Mariveles. They came from different parts of the Philippines and were of different ages, with some as young as 2-3 years old!
Padyakan sa Bataan is a mountain bike circuit race organized by The Provincial Government of Bataan, with the primary involvement of the Provincial Tourism Office. The event was also presented in cooperation with the Municipality of Mariveles and the Bataan Trailriders and Adventurers Network (BaTAAN).

Padyakan sa Bataan - https://twobudgettravelers.com
The race was held at the Karagatan Bay View Peaks, which offers an incredible view of the Bataan mountain ranges, the West Philippine Sea, and Corregidor.
Bikers raced through a 3km loop that involved single and double tracks, as well as climbs and descents. The number of laps required depended on the category and the bikers’ level of expertise. Participants got to choose from the following categories:

  • Open Category for Men
  • Open Category for Women
  • Age Category (Veteran A – 60 and up)
  • Age Category (Veteran B – 50 to 59)
  • Age Category (Senior – 40 to 49)
  • Age Category (Master – 30 to 39)
  • Age Category (Novice – 22 to 29)
  • Age Category (Junior – 21 and below)
  • Fun Category (Men’s Solo)
  • Fun Category (Women’s Solo)
  • Heavy Weight
  • Fat Bike
  • Single Speed
  • Kids Category (7 to 8)
  • Kids Category (9 to 10)
  • Kids Category (11 to 12)
  • Kids Special Category
  • All Bataan (Novice)
  • All Bataan (Masters)
  • Super D (Men)
  • Super D (Women)

Beyond just honoring the heroes of Bataan, Padyakan sa Bataan aims to promote the province’s sports tourism and ecotourism. They aim to showcase the splendid beauty of the province’s mountains and seas, as well as the hospitality and good nature of the Bataeños (man oh man, did I meet some of the nicest people on this planet). And Bataan does not disappoint. Even the avid bikers have come to consider Mariveles’ mountain bike trail as ‘every biker’s dream’. Those who have participated in races abroad consider the local race course to be on par with those they’ve encountered in other countries.

Joining Padyakan sa Bataan?

If you are interested in joining next year’s festivities and would like to get more information on the categories and rules of the games, feel free to contact and follow the event organizers at the Padyakan sa Bataan’s official Facebook page. Registration is FREE!
Other events to make up the weeklong festivities are the Parade of Floats, Military Band Exhibition, Bataan Freedom Run, Koro Bangkal Magbikin Concert, National Commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan, Galing Bataan Trade Fair, among others. You may visit Bataan Tourism’s Facebook page for more details.
Together with the valiant and gracious people of Bataan, let us honor the heroes of the past. And let’s keep them in mind as we all enjoy our long weekend … and the out of town trips and Koreanovela binges that go with it.
Happy Day of Valor, everyone! 🙂

Maculabo Island: Paracale’s Hidden Paradise | Travel Guide

Maculabo Island Travel Guide: Paracale’s Hidden Paradise

During our Bantayog Festival tour, we also had the privilege to visit one of the Paracale town’s hidden paradise. We were originally supposed to head to Calaguas Island, an already known island in the province of Camarines Norte. The Calaguas Island had already made its way to fame online for its powdery white sand beach tagging it as one of the best in Luzon.
maculabo-island-paracale-s-hidden-paradise-travel-guide
On the other hand, an alternative island getaway is just waiting for tourists to open their minds about a new destination, Maculabo Island.

Maculabo Island

Maculabo Island is located only around 30 to 40 minutes from the town of Paracale or from Pulang Daga Beach. It is also known as “Macolabo Island”.
maculabo-island-paracale-s-hidden-paradise-travel-guide maculabo-island-paracale-s-hidden-paradise-travel-guide
Not known to many, Maculabo Island also sports powdery white sand similar to what Calaguas Island have so it’s a good alternative to those who do not want to endure an exhilarating 2 hours boat ride to the known paradise. However, there are not many people knows Maculabo Island and there are a few boatmen who’d like to deliver guests to this destination.
At Maculabo Island, there also is a spot where it’s like the Binurong Point of Catanduanes or a place similar to Batanes because of its highland-like scenery at one end of the island. It’s a 30-minutes to 10hour walk from the docking point but it was really hot that day and we didn’t have much time as we went there at around noon time, so the sun was really high.

We only went there for a few hours and weren’t able to stay for long because we had another itinerary to focus on (for Bantayog Festival) and an overnight stay was not entirely possible due to an itinerary that is not well fixed.

What to See and Expect in Maculabo Island

maculabo-island-paracale-s-hidden-paradise-travel-guide
The island has comparable sand to Calaguas Island making it an ideal alternative when Calaguas Island is not available.
A view that’s very beautiful from afar and a very fine white sand at the shore. It’s a picture-perfect island.
A paradise that has not yet been told by many so it’s still a virgin island.
maculabo-island-paracale-s-hidden-paradise-travel-guide
There’s a small community on the island so everything you do, you still need to make sure that you are within their rules. Do not do anything harsh.
The boat ride to Maculabo Island will not be smooth. Since it lies in the Pacific Ocean, expect huge waves and a bumpy ride.

Boat ride to Maculabo Island

Homestays, I think are available, but for now, we do not have contacts yet.
You can rent a tent though, either at the island or at the Pulang Daga beach. Just look for a person and ask.
The winds are quite raging when it’s around 3 PM onwards like a minor sandstorm is happening. Protect your eyes. The little sands could really hurt.

How to Get to Maculabo Island with Contacts

Pulang Daga Beach

If you are coming from Manila, you need to ride a bus to Daet.
From Daet, take a bus again or a van bound to Paracale. Drop off at the Terminal or the Paracale Municipal Building.
We actually went to the Paracale Municipal Building and from there, we took at a tricycle to Pulang Daga Beach.
From Pulang Daga beach, we were escorted by the Tourism Officers to a resort or drop-off for the boat bound to Maculabo Island (it’s actually a special service so you have to contact anyone from below contacts)
IMPORTANT NOTE: Before going to Maculabo Island, you need to coordinate with the Tourism Officer of Paracale or the following people below.
BOAT and TOUR: Pulandaga Calaguas Adventures (Owned by Ms. Shiela Andrade – for Maculabo and or Calaguas Island)
FOOD: Calaguas Villas Resort Assisted by Kap Alma Ramos of Maculabo Island
Paracale Tourism Office/Officer: Mark Adano Zamudio (0938-408-7859)

The beauty of Maculabo Island is still yet to be discovered so let’s help preserve its beauty and not exploit the island in some way that the communities in it will be harmed.
