Sapporo Ninja Experience via KKday: Must-try Activity When in Sapporo

In search of activities that we could try while in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, we rely mostly on KKday and on this journey, we opted for a Ninja Experience in Sapporo and booked it via KKday.
Our stay in Sapporo is the longest so we have to really look for places and exciting things to do while in the area. One of those activities is to try Ninja training (which I really am eager to do, because you know, Naruto) and the basics of being a ninja.

Sapporo Ninja Experience

The Sapporo Ninja Experience starts at 10:00 am and we have to be at the meeting place at least 10 mins before our session starts. We have to be early because Japanese are known to be time-conscious and are never late, unlike us, Filipinos, who usually have a “Filipino Time” or being late for a few minutes to even an hour.

Our meeting place is located at the foot of Sapporo TV Station and is just a mere 10 minutes walk from where we stay, an Airbnb in a residential building in Sapporo.
By 9:45 AM, we were already at the meeting place, and in about 5 minutes, our ninja driver is already at the station as well.

Hokkaido Ninja Do!

Hokkaido Ninja Do is the activity partner of KKday and it’s where we are heading. Our ninja driver, Kosetsu, was amazing because he also knows how to speak Bisaya, a Filipino dialect mostly spoken in the mid-southern parts of the Philippines. Apparently, he lived in the Philippines for three (3) years and worked there as a tour guide in Cebu catering Japanese clients and guests, and to also learn how to speak good English because, in Asia, the Philippines is known to be also an English speaking country.

While he is driving us to the dojo, he made us watch a short video, about 10 mins long, to learn about what a ninja is and what a ninja does. He also mentioned he is a “modern ninja” because he drives a car and makes use of technology a.k.a. smartphone to make us watch the video.
After merely 10 minutes, we have arrived. The dojo is located in the lower ground area of a building. There also was a door with a signage “Closed” because he said that it is used to deceive enemies. What a way to start Ninja training!

Ninja Training Preparation

When we got in, he made us fill a form (because still, this is an activity) and asked us to change from our regular winter clothes to ninja costume. While changing, he also made us watch a movie about ninja training.

It was really hard for Jane to maintain the hot temperature so she had a little hard time coping with the cold, she loves cold weather but not winter. The studio (dojo) also somehow lacks heating during winter so Jane still felt cold even after changing to ninja costumes.

Start of Sapporo Ninja Experience: Ninja Training

When another door opens, there was another person, in a Neko mask, it was Sensei Yama, the head of the Hokkaido Ninja Do. He is the one who will be teaching us how to be ninjas and our ninja driver, Kosetsu, was his assistant.

Kosetsu explained about the hand gestures that are required for being a ninja. Next, the difference between Samurai and Ninja and the weapons they use.

Sensei Kosetsu also thought us the techniques of a ninja on how they walk and how they could sneak in a place without being noticed or even get lost in the eye of the enemy by using the trapdoors.

After we have perfected the trial, we then moved on to the next activity involving skills and physical capacity.

Physical Training: Being a Ninja

Sensei taught us about how to yield a ninja sword. Jane wasn’t really into these kinds of stuff but I can she’s enjoying so I am extra happy and eager to experience and be good at this activity.

The physical training involves yielding of sword and making use of throw weapons as we know about ninjas. Imagine yourself as a ninja, you could throw shurikens with accuracy and strength. In this next part of the training, it exercises our good sense of throwing things into a target.

This part of the training also involves wall climbing and rope swinging so you’ll really have to use your strength as well. We also tried to blow darts, star-throwing, and kunai throwing. It really was a fun activity, what more if you are a group doing this?

Mind Training: Being a Ninja

Of course, the mind is the best asset a ninja could have. Without knowledge, one cannot be a ninja. In this part of the activity, we were asked to solve a puzzle, and when we got to solve it, there is a clue to the next challenge. You need to think about what the image pertains so you could finish the training.

What is it? I won’t tell because it’s a challenge you should be able to finish yourselves.
After solving the puzzle and getting the item needed, we were given our certificates (or ranks) like a ninja! HAHA!

I got Jounin certification while Jane got Genin certification. If you are a Naruto fan, you’d know how these ranks are different. 🙂

Souvenir Items

At the dojo/studio, there also are all kinds of merchandise ranging from the smallest items a ninja could have to the larger things a collector could get. The small ones are really cheap, and I bought one set of Kunai for only 500 JPY.

At the time, King Clovis, the originator of the French nation, converted to Christianity and decided to build a basilica. Later, in 512AD, the church became the burial ground for Saint Genevieve.

Years later, King Louis XV, the King of France in 1744, got seriously ill. At the time, he vowed that if he recovered, he would build a prestigious church to replace the ruined church of Sainte-Geneviève on the same spot where the original basilica was located.

Fortunately, against all expectations, the King recovered, granting him the nickname “Le Bien-Aime” or “The Well-Loved.” He attributed his recovery to the prayers of Saint Genevieve and decided to put his promise to reality. He then commissioned Jacques-Germain Soufflot, the chief architect under King Louis, to begin the construction of the Patheon.

What Happened? The Pantheon We Now Know Today 

When the project was put to the hands of Jacques-Germain Soufflot, his plan was to build a building that will outshine even the Pantheon in Rome. With this in mind, he infused different architectural styles, combining Greek architecture with Gothic and more. The result was a remarkable testament of early Neoclassicism, marked by a Greek cross with an impressive portico of Corinthian columns.

However, even before he got the chance to finish the project, Soufflot died, and he was replaced by his architect pupil and associate Jean-Baptiste Rondelet, who completed the Patheon in 1790, right at the onset of the French Revolution.

When the revolutionaries won, they nationalized the building and turned it into a mausoleum for the nation’s great men. Since then, the Pantheon, which was originally constructed as a church, became a temple that houses the remains of the great intellectuals of France.

What to Expect in the Pantheon? 

To date, the pantheon now serves as among the most majestic archeological sites in Paris. Combining neoclassical and Gothic architecture, the building also houses incredible frescoes, mosaics, and paintings depicting Saint Genevieve and scenes from French history and revolution.

Among the great men that had been laid thereinclude Francois-Marie Arouet de Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Jean-Paul Marat, Victor Hugo, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, and more.

To get inside the building, you’ll need to pay for a small entrance fee. You can also avail guided tours, ranging from individuals, group tours, self-guided tours to explore the site.

After a long day of exploration and traveling in an unfamiliar place, the evening is one of the best times to have yourself relaxed and pampered off. So we also had this while staying at Memoire Palace Resort and Spa.
According to reviews, the spa that the resort had was one of the best in town, in terms of service, and aesthetics.

Memoria Spa has got to be one of the best spa treatments I had in my life. It was actually should’ve been for two people as a couple-massage session, me and Jane, however, Jane don’t really allow herself to be touched by someone else (except me) so massages are a no-no. With that in mind, I’m going to enjoy the massage for myself.

When we got into the spa, a calming ambiance presented itself. A reception area with high ceiling and a chandelier so grand, the staff looked at us with delight. They asked us about our identification and confirmed our scheduled massage for the night. The staff then has taken us to the second floor where the massage will take place.
The attendant gave us hot tea and sweet potato chips as a small snack.

Since I am the only one getting a massage, the attendant asked me to change clothes and my underwear to a disposable one. Good thing I know about this kind of policy so I’m kind of used to this. She also had me change my clothes to a bathrobe. I imagine Jane changing to see-thru underwear, she’d be in shock. LOL

She had me seated first, put my feet in warm water with aromatic oils, washed and massaged it for a few minutes while I am sipping a glass of hot tea.

One-Hour Full Body Massage

After the foot massage is done, she asked me to lay on my chest on the bed. I asked if she could do hard massage which she did.
While Jane is on the couch watching how the massage is done, I asked her if she could take some photos.

The massage was very relaxing, plus with the aromatic oil she used, I think that was lavender, it made me almost fall asleep. That time, my upper body, especially the wing area of my shoulder is not feeling well, probably due to carrying heavy bags from our trip. The massage went well, and I felt relief on my shoulders after the back massage session.
Next, she asked me to lie flat again but this time facing the ceiling for a frontal body massage.
She also worked up on my shoulders and legs, and oh boy, that massage was very relaxing. Like all the tensed muscles on my body were gone, not all but yes, I felt really good after that. If I could sleep in that room, I really would.
The attendant also kept asking if the massage was okay or if it hurts or just fine. At least they still are thinking about the welfare of the guest rather than just execute the work they have to do.

After the massage, I also had the option to use the sauna, but that needs to be set up first and might take a while so opted not to since we also are scheduled for a dinner at The Stage 1960s.
Once everything was done, I change back to my clothes and went back to the reception for some final arrangement. They asked if everything was okay and if the body massage was good, so I told them it was one of the best massages I had. I was really delighted.
Once again, before we left, they gave us a tray with hot tea and snacks, this time were fried banana strips coated in sugar.
If ever you would like to experience the massage they are offering, feel free to contact them or the front desk. It’s a service that this hotel offers and is really great experience to feel how massage is essential for the people of Cambodia.

Calusa Beach located in Bahia Honda State Park in the Florida Keys is famous for its crystal clear turquoise waters and balmy temperature – so much so that it ranks among best beaches in America. While the state park was significantly damaged by Hurricane Irma in 2017, Calusa Beach remains as beautiful as it ever was.
By far the best stop on our Florida Keys road trip, I enjoyed swimming and snorkeling in the water and relaxing on the soft sand beach. Calm and shallow water is ideal for water activities with kids. While snorkeling I was able to see manatees and other marine life. The bayside beach is adjacent to the old Bahia Honda bridge and there is a trail that leads up to the bridge. The view of the beach from the bridge is worth the short hike. The beach has a few picnic tables and is perfect for spending the day.

Costa Rica may be the most aptly named country in the world. And Cocles Beach along the country’s Atlantic shore offers some of the best sand in all of Central America.
Cocles Beach is a great place for swimming and wading in the surf. The sand is fine and generally pretty litter free. The picturesque blue water, flanked by jungle to the right and a rocky island that juts from the water to the left, also makes it a great spot to sit, relax, and think. best beaches in the world
Though the waves here aren’t as massive as a few other places in the area, surfers enjoy Cocles for its warm water and consistent breaks. Beginners can take lessons and rent boards daily right on the sand.
Cocles Beach lies just a kilometer east of Puerto Viejo, one of Costa Rica’s most famous beach towns. This town gives off distinctly Caribbean vibes and definitely runs on island time.
From Puerto Viejo, you can get to Cocles either by bicycle or on foot. I recommend renting a bicycle for the day, especially if you’re looking for more things to do in Puerto Viejo. There are a few rental shops near the center of town, but I’d recommend inquiring with one of the international-style hostels (they typically have better rates). best beaches in the world

My favorite beach is Shela beach on Lamu Island in Kenya. There are several reasons why this small island with no cars is the best. First, there are luxurious hotels that are affordable, ranging from $30 to $160 a night. Second, the beach is not crowded. When I visited in April, I would only see 3 or 4 other people maximum on the beach, making it feel like a private beach. I can’t think of a better place for a honeymoon since there are beautiful hotels and privacy at a reasonable price. best beaches in the world
The most important reason why I love Lamu Island is the locals and vibe. This is a small island, making it easy to know everyone. Each local has a fun nickname like “Shark,” a captain who isn’t the most trustworthy, or “Crab,” the crab fisherman. Walking down the main road in the old town is enjoyable because it’s easy to recognize faces and wave to all the new friends that you’ve made.

85. Tayrona National Park, Colombia

Tayrona National Park is a protected area on the Colombian Caribbean coast.  It covers some 150 km2 of land and 30km2 of ocean habitat, providing lush forest, glorious coastline and indigenous culture to  explore.  The beaches in Tayrona National Park are stunning.  Not all are suitable for swimming, in fact, some are very dangerous due to strong currents and rip-tides, but others are beautifully calm, like ‘La Piscina’ (the swimming pool) which is protected by a natural ring of rock under the water.  My favorite beach in Cabo San Juan de Guia, which is also the most popular beach for camping.  It is busier, but if you manage to get a hammock in the hut overlooking the beach, there is no better place to wake up and watch the sunrise!

Of course, like all places worth visiting Cabo San Juan del Guia isn’t the easiest beach to get to in Tayrona National Park.  Once you’ve entered the park gates, take a shuttle bus to the beginning of the hiking trail, then it takes a good couple of hours walking to reach the beach.  Alternatively, you can hire a horse which is a great idea if you aren’t a fan of hiking or if you have heavy luggage.  Although it is an effort, I promise it is worth it! best beaches in the world

From turquoise beaches of Bora Bora to the magical Maldives to the Emerald coast in Florida, we have been to some amazing beaches around the world.  But the one beach that blew us away was this secret beach in Tanzania – a sandbar in Zanzibar! Zanzibar was a perfect place to unwind and relax after a few safari days in East Africa.

Our guide met us at the lobby and took us to the small boat that was waiting for us right in front of the hotel.  We made our way to the little strip of sand in the middle of the ocean. The Nakupenda sandbank, one of the best eight secret beaches in the world, was just a 20-minute boat ride away from the hotel we stayed at.   We had the whole beach to ourselves except for a mama who was setting up a make shop to sell some fish and crafts and two other girls.  With the waters on the Indian Ocean on both sides with just a strip of white sand in the middle, this beach was nothing like what we have seen before. We walked from one end of the strip of sand to other. It is a perfect picnic location or for simply laying in the sand.  Once the tide rises the strip of land is submerged in water.  After a few hours, creating memories that last long after the last sun has set over the magnificent Indian Ocean, we left back on the boat leaving only a few footprints that will soon be erased by the rising tide.

I decided to head to the Nyang Nyang beach in Bali because people told me that the beach was deserted. I researched about the beach online and felt that finding the beach was difficult. But following my gut which hinted that the beach was good, I followed the Google maps directions and drove to the Nyang Nyang beach. After driving for an hour from Ubud, the maps said that we had arrived at our destination. An old lady sitting by the roadside told us that we had to go down to the beach. She asked me to buy a toy as a souvenir from her makeshift shop but the sun burnt so hard overhead that I just strode to the sign that pointed towards the stairs going down.
After what seemed like a long staircase, I saw the sand shimmering under the golden sun and beyond lay the turquoise waters of the calm ocean. There was no one on the beach. I change into my bikini in a deserted cafe ( or maybe it was a restaurant) and ran into one of the green corals. The next 2-3 hours that I spent floating in the corals, chasing the orange-yellow fish that scuttled around in the water, and collecting shells on the beach were magical.
Nyang Nyang beach was special. After all how frequently do you find a gorgeous beach all to yourself?

Brazil is a beach country. Nearly 90 percent of the population lives within 60 miles of the ocean. Brazilians are beach experts and going to the beach is a summer recreational staple.Praia do Atalaia / Atalaia Beach is a sweeping beach with rocky tidal pools that are surrounded by broad stretches of soft sand. It is in the far north of Brazil in the state of Parå near the town of Salinas or Salinópolis. It faces north on the Atlantic Ocean just a few degrees south of the equator.
Automobiles are allowed on Atalaia Beach so holiday weekends the southeastern end of the beach will be filled with cars and trucks down to the waterline. Is it possible to enjoy a beach with hundreds of cars? Before I visited Atalaia I would have said “No!” I was surprised. If your looking for a party, you’ve found one. Music fills the air and a variety of rhythms from Carimbó, Brega, Funk, Tecnobrega, Pop, Rock all float down the beach.
Dozens of restaurants far removed from the surf sit atop pole silts. Each establishment sets up their tables near the breaking surf straight out from their building. You will see dozens of young men armed with menus vying for your business as you walk down the beach. Give them an affirmative nod and they will have a table set for you in a flash complete with shockingly cold cerveja / beer, a caipirinha or fresh tropical juices like cupuaçu, graviola, passion fruit, acerola or mango.  One of our favorites is David House. Try the fish stew. The fried fish with the açai and tapioca or farinha (ground manioca) is another can’t miss option.
If a beach without electronic music and rows of SUVs is more to your liking all you have to do is walk to the northeastern end of the beach. Here it is quieter, with few if any cars. If you continue around the point to Praia do Farol / Lighthouse Beach you’ll find even more tranquility.
Pro Tip: wading around the bend from Atalaia Beach to Lighthouse Beach seems easy as you begin wading in the knee-deep water. However, as you reach the point, the water deepens and you will have to swim. If you’ve started the journey without a drybag you will certainly wind up drenching you and your possessions. You can catch a local bus that will drop you just a short distance from Lighthouse Beach and you and your cameras, blanket and beach book will remain dry.

Head to Batangas

Zambales is popular with backpackers and just like Rizal, pretty close to Manila. You could choose activities like island hopping, partying, and beach camping.
You can visit the Anawangin or Nagsasa cove, Potipot or Capones island, and Liwliwa beach. Zambales is simply a perfect destination for a weekend getaway.

Sightsee at Quezon

The tranquility in Quezon is unparalleled. Whether you want to sightsee at the Jomalig island or go to the Hagdan-Hagdan falls, the list is long. Make friends in the stunning white beaches there and don’t forget to enjoy the deductible cuisine.

Bataan
