Follow This Small Town Travel Guide for a Little Adventure

For many people, traveling means immersing themselves into the material and non-material cultures of a certain place. This is why visiting sites and learning about its history is a great way to make the trip more worthwhile.

Big cities, while hustling and bustling, are definitely great locations for exploring urban dynamics. What with high-rise buildings, numerous shops, and intricately designed transportation systems.

However, a small town can offer a much more intimate experience, which always has the potential for various types of relaxing recreational activities. If you have not had a trip to such places, here’s what you need to know about small town travel. Read on to learn more.

Why Travel to a Small Town?

Knowing how to make the most out of the trip is important, but first, let us talk about the reasons why your next destination should be a small city. Check out our list of reasons below.

Allow for a Short Vacation

If you are pressed on time and you want to squeeze in a little trip to a nearby destination, your best bet is a small city. As the name suggests, these places are relatively smaller in size, which means that you can explore most of the city in a shorter span of time.

Laid-Back and Stress-Free Experience

These places have their own charms that may be seen as the opposite of what urban destinations have to offer. You can take your time exploring the site without worrying about a jam-packed itinerary. Moreover, towns tend to have cozier locations for your relaxation.

Deeper Connections with Locals

Because these are smaller in scale, compared to large cities, you can easily mingle with the locals. You can ask about their history and culture to understand more about their little city. Most likely, they will be glad to talk to visitors about their town.

Best Tips for Small Town Travel

Now that you know the reasons why you should consider visiting smaller cities, you might be looking for small city staycation ideas to help you get started on planning. Here’s what you should consider.

Do as the Locals Do

The locals know and love their place well. They are familiar with the ins and outs of the city, which means that they can give recommendations on which sites you can visit, and which restaurants serve the best local dishes.

To fully immerse yourself in the culture of your small-town destination, you might also want to have a taste of what day-to-day living is like for its residents. You can check out local markets, swim in rivers and even use traditional facilities, like saunas and saloons.

Interact with the Locals

Locals are the best resource whenever you travel. As mentioned before, they can give you tips and tricks on how to maximize your stay. You can even get pointers on how to do so without breaking the bank or wasting your time.

Moreover, interacting with locals is a great way to make friends. Who knows? You might find friends for keeps during your travels. This will give you a reason to come back and see more of what the town has to offer. You can even get your new friend to travel with you.

Do Your Own Exploration

Whether you are traveling solo or in a group, you want to make sure that you take the time to try and explore the city by yourself. With the laid-back and cozy nature of a town, combined with the clarity solo excursions have to offer, you can get into a tranquil mood.

This will give you the chance to take in the environment and setting with only your own thoughts to accompany you. This also creates an opportunity to interact with the locals, explore places you have not seen yet, and even taste foods you have not tried yet.

Exploring by yourself is definitely a different experience compared to exploring with your friends in a group, so make sure to give time for this.

Conclusion

Small towns offer a distinct feel compared to big cities. With this small town travel guide, you can start planning your next trip to explore nearby places and even those that are farther away.

REVIEW: Taiwan Unlimited Data Sim Card | Where to Buy one?

On our recent trip to Taiwan, one thing that I am most concerned about is our connection to the online world. Being a blogger and a digital nomad, I need to be connected all the time so I could check my emails and post on our social media accounts. It isn’t really a high requirement but this is something I need to do as I am purely dependent on the internet in order to get work done.
We will be in Taiwan for nine (9) full days so I have to think of a cheaper way to access everything online. Luckily, I found the page Pinoy Traveler’s Unlimited Data SIM Card that offers a sim card who promises unlimited usage of data for a fixed time (5 days, 7 days) and got one. Here’s our review.
[hoops name=”InArticle”]
REVIEW: Taiwan Unlimited Data Sim Card | Where to Get one? - https://twobudgettravelers.com

Shipping

After contacting Benjie Pineda, he sent two (2) pieces of five (5) days unlimited data sim card good for use in Taiwan. It only took about two days via JRS Express so I must say that was an excellent service (and LEGIT too!). It comes with instructions on how to use and what you should do when it won’t connect to the data service the moment you plug it in your phone.

What’s in the package?

It’s a sim card with three (3) cuts (they call it TRIO SIM, regular sim, micro sim, and nano sim) to fit with your gadget. It also comes with a sim eject tool and instructions on how to use the sim card.

Sim Card Usage and Experience

We arrived at the Taoyuan International Airport on a Thursday morning, so immediately put the sim card to use in my phone. I have a Xiaomi Mi A1 android mobile phone (specs) so I know that the reception will be good. Upon inserting the sim card on the phone’s sim tray, it displayed a 4G signal on the notification area after reading the sim. Taiwan Unlimited Data Sim Card
Note: Your phone must not be network locked. It should be “open-line” so it will accept any sim cards you put to it.
Being a techie myself and always checking on network speed, I have a Speedtest app installed on my phone. Speedtest is used to check the network’s speed by connecting to a server providing download and upload results. Here’s the first screenshot of 4G network speed results in Taoyuan International Airport area.
First test: 48 Mbps, wow! This is so good! This LTE data connection is more than enough for my needs! My heart is so excited about using this product. It’s actually better than the internet services in the Philippines, lol!
REVIEW: Taiwan Unlimited Data Sim Card | Where to Get one? - https://twobudgettravelers.com
That’s just for the first day – and for five whole days, I have not lost connection. Even in the subways, the 4G signal is fast – unlike with the 4G signal in the Philippines.
For example, if you have experienced riding the MRT approaching the Ayala and Buendia station, your signal will be lost the moment you go down the tracks. In Taipei, there’s SIGNAL ALMOST EVERYWHERE, even in the mountains! Taiwan Unlimited Data Sim
I’m sorry, I can’t help but compare. Even within the city of Manila, you won’t get a decent signal. The telecoms in the Philippines are truly left behind.
Back to Taiwan, we already went to a lot of places including a place that’s two hours away from Taipei to experience the hot springs, Wulai District, also a mountain area, but the 4G signal was still as good as Taipei.
We also went to Maokong to experience the Maokong Gondola, also a mountainous part of Taipei, but the signal was still 4G.
We went to Elephant Mountain as well for a short hike but the signal in the area was still 4G. This sim card lived up to its promises. Taiwan Unlimited Data Sim Card
After exactly 5 days, my sim card lost its connection. When it starts to change the 4G icon on the phone to another network name, then the sim card is already used up or has reached the 5 days usage.

Second Sim Card

I then inserted the next sim card and tested it the next afternoon. Here’s the result. I was in Taipei.
REVIEW: Taiwan Unlimited Data Sim Card | Where to Get one? - https://twobudgettravelers.com
The 4G signal in Taipei was even better. If you have this sim card, you need not WiFi connections. You can download and upload files, photos, and other things on the internet and it will not back down, (yes, it really was unlimited!).
I highly recommend that you avail this sim card when you’re going to Taiwan. It’s also cheaper compared to renting a WiFi device.
I was using my phone’s hotspot capability so I could share my internet connection with my girlfriend, Jane.
NOTE: 1. If you have your own WiFi device, you can use this sim card so you can share the data connection with your friends.  Taiwan Unlimited Data Sim
2. They also offer sim cards for other countries such as Hong Kong, Macau, China, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Europe, UK, Australia, US, Mexico, and Canada.

Ilagan Japanese Tunnel: A Mark of History in Isabela

Did you know there was a tunnel that has been discovered in Iligan City, Isabela? There’s more than just Bambanti Festival, rice field, corn fields, and crops.

Ilagan Japanese Tunnel, Isabela

They call it the Ilagan Japanese Tunnel which apparently has been used by the Japanese soldiers as base/prison during the World War II.
People have confused it for a cave although it’s actually a man-made tunnel crafted in distress with the sweat and blood of the detained Ilagueños. It served a lot of purposes such as a jail to the Filipino guerrillas during the war and a storehouse of guns, treasures, and hidden wealth.
Feel like you are traveling back in time through the Ilagan Japanese Tunnel as the government has set-up a sound system to create sound effects feels in the area. There also were replicas of Japanese soldiers and Filipino prisoners (imagine that with sound effects).
Those who have first found the cave stated that there had been relics or pieces of gold bars laying on the ground. Also, a Golden Buddha was inside the cave when it was first found but it has now been replaced by a replica. There were also other replicated memorabilia like bombshells, some guns, a golden fan, a few weapons, and some uniforms in that era.
The Japanese Tunnel in Ilagan City in the province of Isabela has been unfolded to the public since February 16, 2016, through Mayor Josemarie L. Diaz. Regarded as one of the historical and cultural heritage of the town, the tunnel was restored, reconditioned, and conserved by the city government to give everyone a slice of the Japanese traditional culture and a slab of knowledge on how the Filipinos suffered in the hands of these conquerors.

Other activities in the Ilagan Japanese Tunnel

Ilagan Japanese Tunnel - https://twobudgettravelers.com

The outside garden of the Ilagan Japanese Tunnel has been designed to look like the parks of Japan. Outside is a Shinto shrine similar to the looks of those in Japan, and a jet plane. On the other side is a zen garden, if you have been to Japan, you’ll know that there is a similarity in the design, which means, they did a good job of landscaping the area to look like one.
You may also rent a Kimono and roam around the area for just P50 pesos. Take awesome pictures whilst in a Japanese Traditional Dress carrying a Japanese umbrella for a more authentic feel. You can have your hair styled as the Geisha’s as well (just like my friend, Rona, on her photo below.)
There’s also a souvenir shop nearby to buy your favorite stuff or memorabilia from your visit to Ilagan Japanese Tunnel.

The Coffee Estate: Instagramable Resort [Vacation House] in Amadeo, Cavite

Amadeo, the Coffee Capital of the Philippines, has been known because of the varieties of coffee products they produce in Cavite. It’s also the primary product of the place where we spent our weekend, The Coffee Estate.

The Coffee Estate

The Coffee Estate review - https://twobudgettravelers.com
The Coffee Estate is a privately owned townhouse turned vacation-house-for-rent/resort. The owner of this resort also owns two branches of coffee shops – Olivia’s Coffee – in Amadeo, Cavite. The family has been in the business of coffee making even before Amadeo has been known to be the Coffee Capital of the Philippines.
This property is perfect for family bondings, barkada trips, couple vacationers who like to have the exclusivity factor.

What to Expect at The Coffee Estate

1. Instagramable Corners

Almost every corner of The Coffee Estate is an instagramable feature for your feed. The patio on the 3rd floor, the view at the top floor, the swimming pool, the garden, even the entrance to the property is carefully landscaped.

2. Lighted Pool and Jacuzzi

Beside the pool is a Jacuzzi to which you can relax while you drink and sip a good glass of wine. It’s a temperature-controlled jacuzzi but we didn’t get to experience a heated one as I’m not sure about the controls, lol. Anyway, you definitely will enjoy as bubbles are coming out from the bottom of the jacuzzi.
The pool and the jacuzzi could both be lighted at night making it a luminescent area at the dark. More Instagram shoots for you and your friends. Mind you though, the water could get cold at night. The water isn’t stingy as well unlike other pools with what we know has too much chlorine.

3. Videoke/Karaoke

Yes, while you’re checked-in at the resort, you can use the karaoke/videoke machine for as much as you want. However, the ordinance about having videoke sessions after 10 pm is prohibited still applies.

4. Cold Breeze and Amazing Sunset

The Coffee Estate review - https://twobudgettravelers.com
The Coffee Estate is located five (5) minutes away from Tagaytay, so there’s definitely a shot of cool breeze anytime after 6 pm until the morning. The sunset, when the weather is good and the clouds are clear, is a stunning view.

5. Wellness Spa

Yes, they also offer wellness spa services. Choose between Full Body Massage and or Full Body Coffee Scrub.
As for us, we opted to avail the Full Body Coffee Scrub for a new experience. From your head to toe, the coffee scrub will be applied. The effect? Super energized and smooth skin (like a baby, seriously!). Coffee Scrub is a must try!

6. Comfy Sleep and Relaxation Guaranteed

There are two rooms available for those who’d like to rent the venue. It comes with two queen size beds and you can also ask for additional mattresses. Do take note that only the 3rd-floor rooms can be accessed. The 2nd and 1st floor are private areas for the family use.
The resort is quiet and very calm at night where you can hear the birds chirping and the crickets singing. If you close your eyes and open your ears, you would only be experiencing the nature and the happiness it brings in the silence.

7. Bring tents for a camping experience

If ever you exceed the minimum pax allowed or you prefer to room outside, you may bring your own tent and sleep in the grassy fields of the resort. Believe me, it’s a great nature experience.

8. Smells of coffee everywhere

The resort is surrounded by coffee fields. Also, Olivia’s Coffee is created in their very own coffee store/production area. When they roast the coffee beans, you’d definitely be sniffing the great coffee aroma.

9. Play basketball or other sports

The Coffee Estate review - https://twobudgettravelers.com
There’s a basketball court just after you enter the property premises. You can definitely play basketball or volleyball in this open court during the day. This area is also best for team building games!

10. Catering Services

If you don’t like to bring in food, you can definitely avail of their catering services. The food will be served while it’s hot and guess what, your head cook is Chef AJ Senido, the celebrity chef who appears on TV. Chef AJ was a student of the famous Chef Boy Logro.

5 Tips to Prepare You for Your First Surfing Trip Ever

Going on your first surfing trip can be exhilarating, but a bit scary too. If you’re still a novice, then you might be worrying about your skill level, or you may not know what to expect from the surfing conditions where you’ll be going. However, you shouldn’t worry, as learning is part of the fun, and there are plenty of things that you can do to prepare yourself physically and mentally for your trip. Here are a few tips to get ready for your first surfing trip ever.

Make Sure You’re Surf Fit

If you’re not in your best shape, then you should start working on getting in surfing shape immediately. Being physically fit will allow you to take on heavier waves, make you more flexible, and allow you to get away from dangerous situations faster.
If you want to improve your flexibility, we strongly suggest you try yoga. Yoga will help improve your balance and will reduce the chances of injury as well. You will also need to get on a cardio regimen to help you with endurance.

Brush Up on Your Skills

If it’s been a while since you’ve been surfing, you’ll need to brush up on your skills, and we’re not talking about the surfing part only. Another important part you should be focusing on is your paddling. If you can’t go to the shore and practice, you could try swimming. This will work on the same muscles you use for paddling.
If you don’t know how to surf yet, know that learning how to surf doesn’t have to be expensive. You can easily find a beginner board online for less than $1000 that will be more than enough to get you started. You can then enroll in lessons. However, before you start your lessons, you have to make sure that you invest in good surfing gear, eat a good meal, and consider watching a few instructional videos. This will give you some initial pointers that will help you to adapt faster.

Research the Destination

Researching the place where you’ll be surfing is essential. You have to get intel on what type of waves you can expect, the best type of boards for these kinds of waves, how shallow or deep the ocean is, and how cold/warm the water is. You should also get information on how to access breaks, prominent diseases, local customs and dress codes, and places where you can buy essentials if you’re missing something.

Start Thinking About Transportation

Some people will prefer driving themselves or hiring a guide or chauffeur. Both options have their advantages. If you go with a guide, you’ll have the benefit of always knowing the best spots, and will have more inside information about the destination. If you decide to rent a car, then you’ll have more liberty, but there’s also the chance that you end up getting lost or have issues with authorities and local driving laws. It all depends on whether you want more structure or want to be able to roam freely.

Have Fun!

Don’t forget to have fun, and bring a few friends with you. It’s never a good idea to go on a first trip somewhere solo, and you never know when you might need some help. Having a surf buddy with you will go a long way and make you feel more secure.
